I will model the way by demonstrating and supporting life-long learning and professional development, taking responsibility for my commitments, collaborating with team members and staff across the institution to achieve goals, and expecting my employees to do the same in these areas. I will inspire a shared vision by communicating my leadership philosophy, expectations, the future benefits of our work, and how my employees bring their strengths to and are part of that vision. I will challenge the process by looking for staff developmental opportunities, process efficiencies, improved customer service, and stepping back to be strategic by discerning patterns, alternative paths, and caring for both our employees and our organization. I will enable others to act, and to expect the same for my employees, by actively listening, engaging in collaboration, treating others with dignity and respect by looking beyond the single story, and seeking feedback for our own improvement. Finally, I will focus on encouraging the heart by recognizing employees and the contributions they make, as well as honoring work-life balance needs.

Values
My core values shape my philosophy and are arranged within my top five strengths. At the core is a fundamental value that every person in a department or team is valuable and has strengths others (including myself) don’t; they are my equals, regardless of the hierarchy.
Strategic means taking a step back from our work to discern patterns and alternative paths, focusing on the larger organization while attending to the immediate issue.
Life-long learning personally and professionally that involves continuous improvement, accessing experts, accepting new challenges that require learning new skills, and personally investing in my own professional development.
Taking responsibility for the commitments I make requires carrying out those commitments in an honest, transparent manner that includes repeatable and documentable procedures when possible, as well as accountability for those commitments.
Being an arranger involves not only organizing and carrying out the work to be done, but doing so in a highly collaborative manner, being flexible as the situation changes with new inputs, and working side-by-side with my team and others across the organization.
Achievers identify things needing to be accomplished and do them without being told, which is a value I also expect of my employees. “It’s not my job” should not be in our lexicon. Achieving also involves quality of work, and in Human Resources that means sticking with our clients in tough situations and often over long time periods to get to a quality resolution. When the going gets tough, we walk side-by-side with our clients until true closure.
Customer service requires finding a way to yes when possible and partnering with our clients to serve their needs. In Human Resources, we must take care of the whole person that is our employees, while balancing for organizational sustainability and effectiveness.
Finally, each person must find their own way to work-life balance and enjoy their personal and professional journeys.
